16 years of space-making and collaborating brings LAL (producer Murr and vocalist Rosina) full circle, re-investigating the individual talents that brought them together. Now available on DNH Records, LAL releases Tiny Mirrors Remixes, an EP that unpacks the duo’s punk ethics in the heart of the electronic music arena. Originally released as a video single last month via exclaim.ca, ‘Tiny Mirrors’ is a prelude to LAL’s forthcoming album, All You Need To Know, and sees a house treatment from Ian Pooley (Ministry of Sound), driving minimalism courtesy of Basic Soul Unit (Ostgut Ton) and a clunky beat collage from Pursuit Grooves (Tectonic). The remix EP also features Murr’s edit of ‘Trips and Wires’, another jewel from the duo’s fifth full-length studio recording, to be released in spring 2015.
You gotta love it when artists you consider close friends…. artists that you were hanging out with this past weekend (!!!)…. forget to mention they just dropped a new video…. smh, lol!
Just happened on this great piece on Toronto musicians, activists, and residents LAL (Rosina, Murr and Ian) produced/directed by StudioFeed.
The piece covers the band’s music, activism and relationship with Toronto. Definitely worth putting aside some time to take in.
Formed in 1998 by Bengali-rooted Rosina Kazi and her life partner, Barbados-born Nicholas Murray and later joined by Ugandan-born Ian De Souza, LAL proves incessantly hard to define.
StudioFeed first sat down with Rose, Nic and Ian in April of 2012. With their self-titled release, “LAL,” set to debut at the Garrison in Toronto on May 18, we here at StudioFeed thought that we had a straight forward shoot in store; film the band, talk about the record and culminate in the record release party at the Garrison. But then we actually got to know the members of LAL, and that whole plan went out the window.
LAL has been described as a “music making magical mushroom, the visible flowering part of a much larger organism, connected with very fine but infinitely resilient roots.” They are “obsessed with making music but more obsessed with using the making of music as a way to materialize ways of being together, fostering a sharing of resources, ideas and, at bottom, maintaining a tenacious hope that persists despite the frightening world we live in.”
Sit back. Take 15 minutes. LAL is what Independent Music is all about.
New project from LAL who actually just returned from India in time for its release.
How it could be that I was in touch with LAL member (and co-founder of pioneering hip-hop production outfit Da Grassroots) Murr just last week and he failed to mention that this album had dropped is beyond me (*scratches head).
Anyways check them performing live March 21st @ Cinecycle behind 120 Spadina Ave (east side between Richmond St. W. and Adelaide St. W).
Nice all-Toronto mix courtesy of HAMWARZ.com. Not a great “mix” in the sense of actual DJing but def a great snapshot of what’s going on in the city (in case you’re behind).
