Directed by Johnny Erwin.

First introduction to Dante Leon.

If you ever heard me rant about the fact that there are kids in this city that you probably never heard of selling out the Opera House with no traditional buzz – this was the dude I was talking about. He did that at 17 and if I recall correctly he had something like 400 twitter followers when I checked back then (don’t know why I didn’t follow him then either.. if I did I would’ve caught this when it dropped earlier in September, smh).

And hey, I ain’t saying he’s the second coming of anything, just that: (i) there are artists with 10 times the # of ‘followers’ he had back then that still can’t sell out the Opera House, (ii) I’d put his 1000+ followers up against alot of those artists’ and feel pretty confident, and (iii) there are movements upon movements in this city happening over and below all our heads, which is why we always stay humble over here and enjoy the ride as if we’d just hopped on it today.

  1. Ty, this dude is garbage. I hope you got some money for the post. There’s a reason it took you until now to “stumble” upon him. Toronto is full of wack ass rappers, this dude being one of them.

  2. Opinion taken, but like I said, I didn’t post it cuz I thought the kid was amazing.. I don’t even know him, and he’s never reached out to me. I posted it bcuz he’s accomplished something stronger, more ‘popular’ artists still haven’t. I’ve mentioned him on occasion as a prime example of what tangible hustle looks like and why even though it’s customary to laugh or look down at an artist that ‘only has 500 twitter followers’, or at least boast about having 10s of 1000s of followers, this kid’s 500 followers were all he needed to sell out The Opera House. Maybe the people that showed up weren’t all from his twitter account but even if it was half that’s a 50% return rate – something artists with 10,000 followers can’t claim to have attained (I actually think indicators like return-rates are way more important for artists to focus on and boast about). In fact we’d all be surprised if those ‘popular’ artists could get 500 of their 10s of 1000s of followers to come see them, and that’s the point this post was meant to highlight – and I think that point makes this artist post-worthy.
