Only a few days after dropping the banger Trillium, with fellow CReW rapper Tray, ShaQ enlists some assistance from CReW headliner, Dillan Ponders who’s coming fresh off the release of his free debut CReW album, Overdose as well as the release of the music video for  Balloon. The producer, axxxxgxxx crafted this lo-fi synth instrumental with a few samples from another well known Toronto artist which adds quite a bit of character to the song…

Windsor Ontario, across the river from Detroit, so close it can feel like a suburb under the gaze of the GM towers. Just like The ‘D,’ Windsor’s also a hotbed of talented artists. Notes’ own cinematographer, Eric Boucher, is one himself. Our own director Benjamin Young Hart went to University there and its where he shot his formative independent movies (greenwoodyard.com). When we finished recording our project, we knew there was a couple videos that needed to be shot in Windsor, and this song happened to be a perfect fit.

Heist plans made over Reubens and coffee. Weighing on their minds as they go through their day-to-day and culminating in a riverside burial.

We managed to shoot the robbery scene 5 or 6 times before the police showed up. We imagine the masks did it, but honestly people must’ve thought we were the cockiest thieves ever, robbing that house so many times. Neighbors asking if we wanted a glass of water after our fifth take of busting down that red door. Also, it turned out there was a warrant out for someone with the same Government as Swamp – so that didn’t help our cause either.

We’re pleased to say that none of us were arrested during the shooting of this video – and we managed to pull it off over the course of two beautiful days.

Windsor, thank you again for having us.

NEW VIDEO: The Lytics “They Said” (Directed by Rhayne Vermette)

Directed by Rhayne Vermette.

First introduction to Winnipeg’s The Lytics: brothers (Andrew, Anthony and Alex Sannie), cousin Mungala, and adopted brother DJ Lonnie Ce.

After the incredible success of their debut album, Winnipeg Hip-Hop crew, The Lytics just premiered the video for “They Said” exclusively with Okayplayer from their sophomore album They Told Me. Proving harmonious maturity and evolving technical skills The Lytics have become somewhat of a musical chameleon and expanded their scope to include everything from funk-rock, to Afrobeat to ‘60s R&B all prevalent on They Told Me.

Brothers Andrew and Anthony Sannie have been trading rhymes together since childhood — as has cousin Mungala Londe, who moved in with the family as a teen. The beats come courtesy of big brother Alex Sannie, who in the early days handled production duties from his bedroom and basement studios, while newly-“adopted” brother DJ Lonnie Ce has plenty of practice whipping dance floors into a frenzy.

Proudly committed to making music “real people” can relate to, The Lytics have never been much for empty boasts and bravado, preferring instead to promote the same brand of street-level optimism espoused by early influences Mos Def, The Pharcyde, and A Tribe Called Quest.
