From working behind the scenes, engineering artists such as newly signed Cash Money artist J-Soul, to traveling to Miami & Barbados to work with other musicians for producing and songwriting, and now gearing up to the release of his upcoming EP, Toronto artist Yuri Koller decided to connect with R&B singer Tanisha on a record where they open up about their own personal complicated situations involving someone they admire.

HOW BLACK MOTHERS SAY I LOVE YOU, presented by Trey Anthony Studios in association with Girls with Bow Ties, is a raw and honest portrayal of the choices many mothers have made in effort to create a better home for their families.
Written and directed by award-winning playwright Trey Anthony (Da Kink in My Hair) the play makes its world premiere in Toronto on May 7 and runs May 5 – 15 at the Factory Studio Theatre (125 Bathurst Street), just in time for Mother’s Day.
The story follows Daphne (Ordena Stephens), a mother who left her children behind in Jamaica to come to Canada for work. The character is based on the real life stories of Jamaican and Afro-Caribbean mothers who left their children in order to make better lives for them, including the playwright’s own mother. It’s about the difficult choices, or lack of choices, women of colour in particular have had to make for their families’ futures. The play deals with love, loss, migration and ultimately acceptance.
“The play breaks down barriers and exposes the fact that motherhood isn’t at all the love and fluff as we wish it to be,” said Anthony. “The sacrifice of loving a child by leaving, learning to love a child who’s gay, learning to love a child in any other way than what you know; these are honest choices our own mothersand grandmothers were forced to make.”
Anthony has put together a cast of award-winning actors, including Ordena Stephans (Da Kink in My Hair), Jewelle Blackman, Robinne Fanfair andAllison Edwards-Crewe. On the production team, singer-songwriter and producer Gavin Bradley composed the original score and lighting the stage is four-time Dora award-winner Steve Lucas.
On Saturday May 7, Trey Anthony Productions, recepCon and TD Bank present the #100GIRLS initiative. One hundred girls of colour from low-income families will attend the play and be given the chance to explore the world of theatre. Ticket and transportation will be fully provided for the 100 girls chosen within the GTA.

Blake’s BEEN grindin’. I’ve always rated him as one of the purest artists in the city. Not many love and breath this sh*t like he does. And that passion for the art and the culture is clear with F.A.I.L.U.R.E. – which is not only an album but also a short film as well as an ArtBook with photographer-extraordinaire SoTeeOh. Three mediums all released under the F.A.I.L.U.R.E. umbrella. Definitely ambitious for any artist let alone an indie one but for some reason I expect nothing less from Blake. Shouts to him and the whole team!
Album features JellyTooFly, Kardinal Offishall, Tamara Madison, Raz Fresco, Devontee and more as well as production from Rich Kidd, Junia-T, Lord Quest and more. Take it in below and copp that if you want to support via his website.
Lessons from personal failure at the helm of three –part hip-hop music project by homegrown artist, Blake Carrington who, tells his story of retribution, young fatherhood and personal ascension through a combination of music, art and film.
“FAILURE has been an integral part of my life and becoming the person I am today,” said Carrington. “I can only hope that my journey inspires the listeners of this album to love themselves and understand that success and excellence first comes from within.”
The three part project includes an album of 18 carefully mastered tracks featuring a Toronto collaboration featuring artists like Kardinal Offishall, Jelly2Fly, and production from Rich Kidd and Juina T. The album is also accompanied by an art book, co-produced by one of Toronto’s leading photographers, SoTeeOh. The book is compiled of compelling photography creatively depicting Blake Carrington and his evolution as an artist, highlighting some of the inspiration that kept him going.
The final component of FAILURE is a short film, written and directed by Brendon Samuel and Omari Burke from 88 Films. The short features Blake Carrington and Tarek Ibrahim (aka Wav) who play brothers forced to make life changing decisions in order to find a better life. The story is based on actual events.
This unique approach to storytelling and music joins the changing tides in how artists identify and represent themselves, diving deeper into the choice of mediums they choose to explore.
“The F.A.I.L.U.R.E experience” (Album, Short Film, Art Book) launch took place at The ArtScape Sandbox, downtown Toronto on April 16. (4.16.)
