2013 has seen R&B turned on its head with artist returning to the genres roots, as well as pushing the boundaries even further than before, and Zaki Ibrahim is Canadas answer to it. Drawing from Sade, Radiohead, Stevie Wonder, and J. Dilla as inspiration, her debut full-length album, Every Opposite, has an apocalyptic allure that makes it impossible to forget. The album was nominated for and part of the shortlist for the 2013 Polaris Music Prize. She is no stranger to awards, having been nominated for a Juno for her 2009 EP Eclectica: Episodes in Purple. Her live performance is highly energetic and captivating, with a mix of sonics and visuals that transports the listener to the center of Zakis universe.
Coming off of his recent Soundclash Music Award win, R&B Singer and songwriter Brendan Philip is turning heads with his carefully honed and crafted live show. Having supported the likes of fellow Canadian Shad, as well as international star MIA, Brendan is poised to shine brightly and captivate many new fans. As a part of Fake Art Records, Brendan has released his new A/B side Feryouh/Wildside on cassette and digital download in July of 2013.
Shouts to Saidah and Click for always pushing the envelope with their album campaigns. I’m very interested in seeing how this all comes together.
Hello Folks,
So, I’m working on a new album and joined with PledgeMusic to create a place to interact with people on this journey. The album is called RedBlack&Blue, named after the colours of my three totem animals — Red Robin, Black Panther and Blue Butterfly — and about finding your voice, speaking your truth and empowering the human spirit.
Join me on this journey and choose one of the really cool exclusives that I’ve created to engage and build a community around the creation of this project, which includes releasing three 5-6 song EPs.

So this is kinda cool…:). Cityonmyback is officially one of the blogs associated with the newly launched OffTheGridTo.com. In short, the site is an off-shoot of TheGridTo.com (the weekly magazine of which I’m sure you know about if you’ve spent any time downtown) and our posts will be popping up on their site along with some other cool-ass blogs.
The Grid is a weekly city magazine and daily website providing a fresh, accessible voice for Toronto. Our goal is to capture the vibe and energy of a city in ascendance, largely by rejecting the glossy, doggedly aspirational vision of it you see in so many other publications.
Anyways, to celebrate the new partnership we’ve got two tickets to The Ex to give away. Whoop whoop! Pretty easy stuff here. First person to e-mail us at cityonmyback@gmail.com with their full mailing address is gonne get hooked up! Good luck…
UPDATE: Congrats to Victor from Scarborough for taking home the tickets!
