Toronto monthly event #TheHustle features a buzzing all-city lineup headlined by Keita Juma.

TORONTO – The Academy is back with the third edition of its recently launched #TheHustle concert series. Helping ring spring in are three Toronto acts quickly building a buzz in their home city and beyond. Leading the pack is Keita Juma, the Fake Arts Records artist who recently released his Chaos Theory LP to critical acclaim and SoundCloud success (over 35,000 plays since January 6th, 2015). He’s also received broad love for the innovative video for lead single “Come Over” featuring Brendan Philip, invoking infectious deep house grooves while the duo exchange casually swagged-out verses. The labelmates and longtime collaborators will be performing a set presented by Manifesto and Red Bull Sound Select at the Field Trip music festival in June, alongside the legendary alt-hip hop group De La Soul.

Adding to the local firepower are Mad Kids Records rapper Beaugé and StayOutLate, a trio of Brampton-bred and 416-based emcees Tremayne, Scott Free and Japes. All five artists on the roster have been steadily building a buzz in Toronto by playing key shows, collaborating with buzz producers, and aligning with innovative artists to disrupt the scene from the inside out. On March 19th, 2015, Torontonians will get a chance to see just why #TheHustle is putting the spotlight on these very talented individuals. Providing the soundtrack for the night is another young talent, DJ Yobi (DSTRY).

About Keita Juma:
Alternative Hip Hop never sounded so good, Keita Juma is what you wish you heard when you were younger and what your glad you heard now. He is “Hip Hop” inviting Rock, R’n’B and Dance Music to dinner and everyone wants seconds.

Compared to the likes of Common, Andre 3000 and Mos Def, this young man is fitted for the Hip Hop history books. Keita Juma is a credited recording engineer and mix engineer – the best sound is always first priority. Self-production inspired by Danger Mouse (Gnarles Barkley), Kanye West and many more has made this sound so diverse but yet still current. Raised in England and relocating to Canada at 11, “A Breath of Fresh Heir” is what music needs and is what you will get.

EVENT: Steam Whistle Unsigned Series feat. Tasha the Amazon and Brendan Philip (Friday, Nov. 28th)

rez | Events | Friday, November 28th, 2014

UnsignedTorontoNov2014-poster11x17-v1

And another dope show for tonight.

For our 30th edition of Steam Whistle Unsigned Series we’re bringing in plenty of homegrown talent. From Tasha the Amazon to Brendan Philip and Joseph of Mercury. There’s plenty of opportunity to discover new genres in support of Artist Health Alliance.

We’re proud to be bringing on board Tasha the Amazon, the wild and unapologetic MC with tribal influences stemming from Jamaica. We’ll be welcoming Toronto producer Brendan Philip, whose soulful blend of ambient pop has backed artists tracks ranging from The Weeknd to James Blake. They will be joined by Joseph of Mercury – who’s soulful yet powerful presence could make him the musical love child of Chris Issac and Morrisey.
Much like Toronto our 30th edition of Steam Whistle Unsigned provides a diverse array of musical acts and genres. Giving fans the chance to explore new music in one awesome night with all proceeds from the ticket sales going directly to Artists Health Alliance.

EVENT: NICE II feat. Jazz Cartier, Wish & Plumes Live at the Garrison (Friday, Nov. 28th)

rez | Events | Friday, November 28th, 2014

WL_NICE2

Looks like the making of a nice night tonight at the Garrison. Haven’t seen Jazz live yet so def gonna try and reach. Shouts to Dalton Higgins!

Back in April, Wavelength’s Jonny Dovercourt and co-conspirator & global/urban music promoter Dalton Higgins put their heads together to bring you the first “NICE” party (“Nifty Interventions for Cultural Enhancement”). The multi-genre culture clash aimed to create a live showcase that better reflected the musical and demographic diversity of the city – and the people came, and saw that such a thing was possible, and awesome.

With a new Mayor of Toronto elected and a different leadership style to be deployed… now what? We can’t predict what will happen at City Hall, but we can say that NICE II will happen Nov. 28 at the Garrison, and will include hype rapper Jazz Cartier (Get Home Safe Crew), slack-rockers Wish (Hand Drawn Dracula Records) and Montreal chamber-pop crew Plumes (album release tour). Plus more NICE-ness to come!!

Watch Jazz Cartier’s “Switch/The Downtown Cliché” video premiere on The Fader.

Stream Wish’s debut album on Consequence of Sound.

Listen to Plumes’ new single, “Swimming With Astronauts.”
