NEW MUSIC: Ian Kamau x Big Sproxx “America”

Ty Harper | Audio,Music | Tuesday, December 2nd, 2014

Well alright then..

There is a crisis in America. This crisis began with the first European settler encountering the indigenous people of the land; the First Nations. This crisis continued with the first enslaved African landing on the shores of North America, and the first Japanese internment camp. There are too many examples to name.

This crisis is a crisis of value, value of economy over human life and the environment that sustains it, value of one perception over another, value of the rights of one group over another and the hypocrisy of “freedom” by force.

This skewed perception of value is present all over the world but in no place is it so extreme as in America, presently the wealthiest and most powerful country in the world. The injustice in America is both it’s foundation and it’s eventual downfall (see Rome for details). The crisis is a moral one.

Produced by Big Sproxx, the producer behind the Freedom Writers, I wrote the song but left the names out because this has happened many many times before, and will happen again. It is a sister song to ‘Black Bodies’ a song I wrote for my 2011 album One Day Soon, that song was about violence inside the black community, ‘America’ is about violence (structural, political and social) toward the black community in the form of police brutality and the injustice that seems to inherently follow it. ‘America’ is told from the perspective of a member of the community who witnesses the shooting, reflects on it’s reality and ends up on the streets in chaotic protest.

This song is a protest, but it won’t solve the problem, people will.

NEW VIDEO: Ain’t No Love – P*ssy Down (Directed by Aaron A)

rez | Video | Tuesday, December 2nd, 2014

Kinda on the fence about posting this one. Firstly, I’m definitely a big fan of the lead singer, Saidah Conrad. She’s killed the hooks of every song/video they’ve put out so far. Speaking of which though, after those past few joints, which were super poppy and fun, this one kinda came out of left-field to me.  Especially since I don’t know if the MCs are convincing in this lane. Too sexy, too soon perhaps??? Lol. Dunno.

Anyways…posting it up for you to make your own conclusions.

Canadian renegade pop trio Ain’t No Love release their brand new track ‘Pussy Down’ as the first single from their forthcoming EP, ‘Plummet,’ via Warner Canada on the November 12th.

Ain’t No Love are made up of rappers Roland “1990” Broere and Eli “Beanz” McBean alongside the hypnotic singer Saidah Conrad. The group’s music blends hip hop, electronic beats and r’n’b vocals to create a unique mix that was born in the clubs and on the streets of Montreal.

The group’s notoriously high energy live show have won them fans around the world and have caught the eye of so many reputable members of the industry – resulting in them being invited to share the stage with Zeds Dead, Iggy Azalea, Steve Aoki, Redman and Calvin Harris. They’ve also played industry showcases like SXSW and been featured on MTV, Billboard and Majestic Casual. The Bridge and Law remix of their track ‘Love Me Lots’ currently has over one million views on YouTube.

‘Pussy Down’ will surely pack dance floors while at the same time perfectly showcasing Ain’t No Love’s ability to mix and switch multiple styles to create something that sounds like no one else.

The accompanying music video for ‘Pussy Down’ features many contradictions, something the group were well aware of: as the band states – “The irony of Saidah singing such a hyper-ised chorus – directed at a female subject – was not done unintentionally.” The director, Aaron A, paired this image of female power alongside the male group members and sultry female extras in a surreal black void. In Aaron’s words, this was an attempt to place the “juxtaposition on a pedestal.”

Singer Saidah explains how the video’s subverted imagery seeks to change the idea of hip-hop and r’n’b music videos which have stuck to the same formula for many years – “’Pussy Down’ toys with the concept of power through ity. In today’s world there’s a sort of expectation for male and female roles and by directing the hook at a woman, we’re trying to flip this idea [of expectations] on its head.”

Expect many more surprises from Ain’t No Love in 2015.

NEW MIXTAPE: Mae Oriel – Playback

Mae-Oriel-The-Playback-Mixtape

After her contribution on the Keyz of Life project and dropping some sparse viral joints over the past few years Mae Oriel drops her mixtape, Playback (I believe her first!). Looking forward to taking this one in. Lots of dope new R&B out of the city to take in. Shouts to all the singers on the GRIND.

After the release of her singles “Toyin” and “Can’t Say No” earlier this year, Toronto native Mae Oriel drops her 90s inspired mixtape, “Playback” including more smooth bass filled joints like “Dictation” and “Diet” which she playfully calls her double D’s. While currently in the studio with her band recording her upcoming debut EP, “Cheap Thrills” and being an up and coming songwriter in the industry, Mae Oriel still finds time to give us a taste of her vocals and what’s to come with her seductive new mixtape, “The Playback” available now for download! Check it out below!
