It might not be the lane of hip-hop that’s considered “cool” these days but it shouldn’t be forgotten that URBNET has been contributing to the city’s / country’s scene for 17 years now. I can’t co-sign all the artists on the label but there have always been a couple of great ones and definitely some solid releases over the years. Here’s the latest compilation as part of their “Underground Hip-Hop” series.
The URBNET branded Underground Hip-Hop compilation series returns in 2016 with Volume 9. This fourteen track collection features new music from Evil Ebenezer, Moka Only, Elaquent, Myka 9 and Factor as well as tracks from Animal Nation, Matt Brevner, Philly Moves, Swamp Thing, Fortunato and more of your favourite underground hip hop artists from the URBNET roster.
In the second episode of On The Ones, we sit down with Devontée to talk Bob Marley, space, and bare tings.

New album. New tour. Enjoy!
Today, Cartier announces dates for his first headlining European tour this spring, which include performances in London, Paris, Berlin, Amsterdam and Brussels – just to name a few. There will also be an upcoming New York City show at renowned hip?hop venue, SOB’s, on Feb. 25th. In line with Cartier’s enigmatic nature, the surprise release of Hotel Paranoia arrived in the form of a carefully thought?out social media campaign. His fans were directed to his newly revamped website, where they would sign up to receive a cryptic “telegram” for 13 nights leading up to the debut. This viral guessing game created a frenzy on social media.
2015 was a huge year for Jazz Cartier. Marauding in Paradise received a score of 7.3 from the notoriously critical Pitchfork, a best 2015 album nod from Pigeons and Planes and a long?list nomination for the renowned Canadian Polaris Music Prize. The mixtape was “a tough, layered coming of age story stuffed with paranoid retellings of late nights and dark schemes, all braided over gut?punching beats.” (The Fader) In addition to the highly?acclaimed release, Jazz Cartier performed sold out shows in Europe and Canada, as well as headlined his Paradise Express Tour in the U.S. The tour included a special, sold?out performance in Los Angeles, in partnership with Red Bull Sound Select, where he “ won over the crowd with his fan favorites ‘Dead Or Alive’ and ‘Stick & Move’” (Vibe). His 2016 kick?off, homecoming show in Toronto on Feb. 5, immediately sold out to a 1,200 seat venue in 24 hours.
While Cartier is known for his eloquence in storytelling, both lyrically and visually, he is equally known for his electrifying live performances. His adrenaline pumping shows tend to veer towards a punk rock ethos than your traditional rap performance. Currently, Cartier’s focus is on music, but has been featured on trendy menswear sites, including Hypebeast and Hypetrak, for his signature, stylish flair. Jazz Cartier, born Jaye Adams, has “confidently carved his own lane” (Complex) when it comes to separating himself from his contemporaries such as Travi$ Scott and A$AP Rocky. While Jazz Cartier’s heart bleeds Toronto, his sound is derived from traveling and living in far and disparate places such as Kuwait, Maine, Idaho, Connecticut, Houston, Atlanta, Barbados and Virginia.
2016 will be a banner year for Jazz Cartier. January alone included a week?long recording session with Mike Will Made It at Red Bull’s recording studio in Los Angeles and a trip to Venice, Italy to film the music video for “Opera.” Cartier, a Renaissance artist of his generation, cultivates a sound that inject intellect and imagination, setting the new standard for artistic creation. Stay tuned for more exclusives.

And the Shing Shing don’t stop…
One of the OGs in the city with some new music and a new push. Shouts to this dude man!
This song is the beginning of a new chapter for Adversaree, as he embarks on another musical journey through life’s ups and downs. Lacing his lyrics over the heavy baseline, club beat with street appeal from the beatsmith Flako from Germany (but now residing in London). Flako is well known for his wide range styled beats, and continues to break barriers with his style and creativity. The song represents the feeling of being alone, battling everyday demons, negative spirituality moments, in one’s life. As artists, we tend to use our art as medicine, for what ails us, mentally, physically or spiritually. This song tries to reflect that.Shouts to MICSeries for releasing this exclusive track, for the graphic work and for the overall support through the years. You can check more of my songs, as well as other amazing Canadian artists on more MICSeries mixtapes, right here:
www.micseries.comShouts to my kids and family, CampX, SWC aka The Ville, BTX, The Hill, my barber JayFade and my Rex fam. Bless up, always.
Last, but definitely not least, RestInPower to BooMatic (CampX), D-Ice (SWC), BobbyDee (SWC), SonOfSoul (Toronto DJ and friend), Buddhist Monk aka Zen Master (BTX), and everyone else close to all of us. You all inspired this song, as well as MANY others. We all miss you!!! Love.
