A couple years ago when I was at MTV News I got word of an open mic initiative in Malvern getting a lot of attention. It was called R.I.S.E. and run entirely by young kids from the area. One of those kids was Randell Adjei and I would end up producing a profile on him and how he started the initiative with his friends and peers. This Monday will be R.I.S.E’s last event of the year. If you haven’t been to a R.I.S.E. event yet, this would be a good opportunity to check it out. Guest performers include John River, Esie Mensah, pHoenix Pagliacci, Adria Kain, Brooke Jean, Tuggstar, Wolf J, YHW, C-Flava, Te Holder and Zakisha Brown.
Shouts to Randell and the whole R.I.S.E team. What they’re doing over there is great. I wish I had something like this to look forward to when I was coming up in Malvern.

The Big Ticket enlists two heavyweights for what’s sure to be a dope show this Friday night. Hip-hop will be in the building.
After the dopeness that was “Soul Runner”, pHoenix, DijahSB and A. Harmony have linked up for a full-length album called Hometown Herverts – the release party of which is tonight. Hip-hop will definitely be in the building!
Party jumps off at 8pm.

Wow man. Two-night event going down this week in celebration of Scratch’s 25 years (part 2 – “The Party” – is on Friday at Sound Academy). Yes. TWENTY-FIVE years behind the wheels of steel. And not just doing it either. For 25 years, he’s actually been murdering it and literally became one of the best DJs in the world hands down across any genre. Scratch is definitely one of the reasons why we here in Toronto are so spoiled when it comes to experiencing what a great DJ can and should do. We hold our DJs to a higher standard because of people like Scratch and hopefully the creativity, consistency and technical proficiency he’s demonstrated over his career can work to inspire the new crop of DJs on the come up.
Come celebrate DJ Starting From Scratch this Thursday night alongside an all-star cast of amazing artists and personalities! Congrats man. And thank you!

After months of keeping Jayd Ink in heavy-rotation (“Sweet Conversation”, “The Real Thing”, “Sound Like This”, “401 West”, “Galaxy”, etc…) I’m really looking forward to checking out her live show. Should be another dope night courtesy of Tika Simone and the whole Known [UN]Known family. Shouts to the city.
Born in Kingston, Jamaica and raised in Toronto, R&B singer/songwriter Jayd Ink first came to prominence in late 2013, when she released three singles (Sweet Conversation; The Real Thing; If I Was) which caught the attention of various A&R’s and record labels throughout North America.
Prior to her music career, Ink did poetry but choose to transition to singing and songwriting because of her love of music and fervour for new challenges. Her poetry background allows her to effortlessly move through a myriad of musical genres, enabling her work to be a transformative space of inventive thinking and creativity.
2015 has been a monumental year that saw her sharing her sound all over the world, unwaveringly amassing acclaim from industry heavy hitters like Mannie Fresh and Charles Pettaway, along with incredibly talented artists and producers from BOB’s No Genre Label, for her alluring stage presence; compelling voice and raw depth- Ink’s prowess is undeniable.
‘Sweet Conversation’, the enchanting single that assisted in Jayd’s rise, was featured in a short film titled ‘Chameleon’ which premiered at the TIFF Bell Lightbox in the Summer of 2015. Jayd’s latest project – Invitation Only, a sultry, smooth and intimate five track EP was released early September of this year with two songs ‘Galaxy’ and ‘At.Lanta’ that had an exclusive release with the UK group The Good Vibe. With audiences awaiting visuals for Invitation Only, anticipation has reached maximum levels, as it is clear that there is no limit to what Jayd Ink can do.
