JOHN RIVER – THE CALM (MIXTAPE)
Toronto, ON (November 20, 2012) – It’s The Calm before the storm. Toronto’s hip-hop future is in good hands with 17 Year-old producer/artists like John River taking charge and this new release is proof of that. The Calm is available now for FREE download and we highly recommend you take it in. John River got a handful of self-produced tracks along with production from 16 Year-old Francis Got Heat and Mississauga’s own, Showboiz. The Calm is refreshingly low on features, giving the project plenty of opportunity to showcase John River’s talent. Guest appearances include Bad Boy’s Los, Anthm and Kembe X.
“Every Evening” was the song that introduced us to John River and it nicely showcased his ability to tell a story, deliver a message and be mindful of keeping the music catchy. It was the type of introduction that gave you that urge to immediately dig through YouTube to find more of their work. We’ve been keeping a close eye on John ever since. He came across as a bit of a modern day sounding AZ with a similar vibe but undeniable individuality. At a young age he’s demonstrated leadership and a need to create positive change. “Don’t Want To Be” spoke out on the gun violence plaguing the GTA and comments on issues like racial profiling. From beginning to end, The Calm tells a story of a young black male growing up in Toronto and the challenges he’s facing.
If you haven’t heard about 17-year-old Canadian Rapper/Producer John River, you are about to know now. A soulful artist with delivery mixed with witty wordplay and lyricism beyond his years.

Catching up with the fam on the West Coast. Shouts to Flipout & Jay Swing and the legendary Rascalz producer Kemo (collectively known as thoseMFs) for continuing to rep my hometown so proper. Mixtape definitely features some goodies and gives you a solid look at what’s poppin’ out West right now. Features Shad (pretty sure he’s living out there now), SonReal, Checkmate & Concise, Moka Only and a lot more (including a drop from Nardwuar, lol). Full tracklist under the hood.
If you didn’t get a copy the first time around, or just straight up slept, here once again is the download link to the VANCITY GIANTS mixtape that myself, Kemo and Flipout released with the help of our friends at Vancity Original. This mixtape is (almost) everybody who is putting in work, rocking shows, releasing music, and making the Vancouver Hip-Hop scene move. Cover art and track list are below. Look out for Vol. 2 this December!
As a bonus, I’ve also included the DL link to all the performances from the VANCITY GIANTS release party. District 36, Fizal Stars, Edge 1, Kyprios, Tee Loc & Caspian, Evil Ebenezer, Snack The Ripper, Defenders Of The Faith (Checkmate & Concise), Heatwave, Red 1 (and a Rascalz reunion) all took to the stage to help celebrate the release.
JellyTooFly drops the anticipated mixtape King. Shouts to Jelly man. She’s built a nice little buzz for herself in a relatively short time so you know this one’s worth checking out. Full tracklist under the hood.
S.A.R.S. aka Sick Artists Runnin Shit Presents S.A.R.S. 9: Quarantine, the latest addition to their acclaimed mixtape series. Established in 2003, S.A.R.S. has now been circulating music across Canada for close to a decade, and has sold over 100,000 copies (physical and digital) independently. They’ve featured artists from across North America and have become one of the most known and celebrated brands in Canada’s mixtape history. The success is due largely to the grind of S.A.R.S. founder and frontline MC, T.R.A. aka Tha Rhyme Animal – an original member of Toronto’s infamous Empire crew and also the host of the series.
S.A.R.S 9: Quarantine is action packed with amazing emcees, lyrical skills and rhyme schemes that guarantee you’ll be looking for the repeat button. The mixtape features a ton of dope artists including The SARS Network, Freedom Writers, Junia-T, Peter Jackson, Raz Fresco, Team Homi, KemiKAL, T-Gramz, Kinsmuv and much more. Make sure you get a copy of this Canadian hip-hop classic and support the independent local underground artists.
