IvanUnknown releases his debut full length project with production from the likes of MURR, Katalyst, and an appearance from Saukrates.
TORONTO – Inspired by the experimental production styles of artists like Flying Lotus, Hudson Mohawke and Knxwledge, Ivanunknown collected a handful of Canadian electronic music producers to create the backdrop on his debut full length album, Fickle, out February 11th on DNH Records. Middlefield, Matthew Maaskant, Murr and his brother Phen Ray explore dark dub, minimal techno, throwback R&B and soul rhythms beneath Ivanunknown’s silky vocals.
“The songs aren’t about sex and money,” says Ivanunknown, ”this album is an expression of love: love for music, love for women, love for self.”
The album features Canadian rapper Saukrates on the murky, reggae-inspired single “Make It By,” while “So Close So Far” has attracted fans like Osunlade for its slow building, futuristic sound. R2 Records label head Kyri describes the song: “Evolved soul is the simplest way to put it. Ivanunknown has all the heritage of what went before, with a fresh twist.”
Ivanunknown’s “Solitude” is a love song complete with old school flow and gritty hip-hop rhythms, and “Perfect Alibi,” is a tense, emotional ride, with DJ Catalist’s remix rounding out the album with pop and R&B flavours.
Ivanunknown recently released house singles with Nick Holder (listen to “Ivan’s Burden”) and Kansas-based producer Leonard Dstroy (listen to “Ivan’s Burden Pt. 1”).

Insight on Sean Leon’s music-making process via Mischief Magazine!
Full interview @ http://www.mischiefmagazine.com/2014/02/sean-leon-interview/
I first discovered Sean Leon when one of the authors of Mischief Magazine (@andinfinity) sent me a Youtube link to a song from his first album, Ninelevenne, The Tragedy. Intrigued, we downloaded his first offering and were very impressed. Within the first hour I decided to follow him on Twitter, and asked for an interview about his second album Narcissus, The Drowning Of Ego.
Lets get right into it. How did you manage to make such a great second effort, with the success of the first still being so fresh?
The Tragedy (Ninelevenne) was compiled of a lot of old ideas. It was a project that I had in my mind for a very long time. What was difficult taking those ideas and making them tangible, you know, making them real. I was recording in my mother’s basement when it was available to me, at the time I didn’t have a stable living situation, I was bouncing around from place to place, house to house, I was even homeless at one point. I made Ninelevenne on a 50 dollar laptop that would crash on me 3-4 times a day, I was doing the best I could with what was available to me. I released it in hopes that someone would see it and would want to help me out and give me the opportunity to make better music. As soon as I dropped it, I got opportunities to be in a studio and I was able to make music with fewer limitations. That’s what Narcissus is. It’s my mind as an audio sound scape. There’s a 10-minute intro. The sounds are so different. It’s new wave, shit you haven’t heard before. It’s literally extracted from my mind, like some inception type shit. Since Narcissus, I’ve been offered more and I’m excited to use these new resources to make even better music and raise my own personal bar. Hopefully make some next level type shit that people can really fuck with.

In following up on the release of his initial single, “Big Dreams, ” dropped off in visual form last month, Flex of The Antiheroes is back to deliver the second track from his upcoming debut project, SALEM. “Medicated” features guest appearances from DillanPonders and Emerson Brooks, each complementing the Toronto rapper undeniably well. Be on the lookout for SALEM to arrive in the near future.

Proper.
There’s usually a lack of powerful, relevant, meaningful music you can have as your anthem during Black History Month (or throughout the year for that matter). Cue IBC’s “Black History Month” and let it play. In the spirit of Public Enemy, Paris, X-Clan, and all other emcees and groups who inspired us to SAY SOMETHING.
