Daniel Caesar drops in to the q studios for a live performance of “Won’t Live Here”. Also see below for a short interview:
There’s been a gradual groundswell of attention surrounding Oshawa’s Daniel Caesar, but even though the R&B singer has been touted as the next big thing to come out of Canada, Caesar isn’t letting the hype get to him.
“I feel like once I start believing that, that will mess me up,” he admits. “I smile, nod and just try to write.”
Caesar, who left the “lonely feeling” of the suburbs now resides in Toronto where he’s been able to build up his performing skills playing sold out shows and festival stages, promoting his critically-acclaimed 2015 EP, Pilgrim’s Paradise. “I went from a lot of restrictions to just absolute freedom when I moved out here,” he adds.
And while he has talked at length about his strict upbringing under his parents’ roof, which included attending church every week, he does credit his parents for the person he is today.
“My parents, they loved me and they had their view of how one should live their life; they had a very streamlined view of the world as good and evil,” he explains. “I’ve grown and realized that things are a little more complex than that […] But I’m thankful because I’m here because of that friction we had.”

q is a magazine show that’s unpredictable in the best sense – proud to be “a wild mix of culture by way of Canada” as described by the New York Times. The Globe & Mail noted the show’s “raging popularity across a variety of platforms — podcasts, television, websites, satellite radio, terrestrial radio, and occasional live remote broadcasts.”
