Greatness!
“Don’t Believe the Hype” is not only a Public Enemy song, but a philosophy thatAdam Bomb always comes back to when writing straight-up bomb music (a characteristic he’s now been officially recognised for, what with his recent win withNaturally Born Strangers for Rap Recording of the Year at the 2015 Juno Awards).
Once again, we’ve collaborated with Reign Media to bring you another episode of Exclaim! TV‘s Sweet 16s. This time, we took the award-winning Toronto emcee into our backyard to perform the sweetest 16 bars he’s ever written.
Before busting out some rhymes from “Tell Me” (a track taken from his SARS 4mixtape), Adam Bomb revealed parts of his personal history to Sweet 16s host King Reign, discussing his initial fascination with drawing tape covers, and how that eventually led him to writing his first rhymes. Later, he discusses creating honest music and shared his top five influences over the years.

A former Sony/Columbia artist, Stylus Award winner and Juno Award nominee (as part of group Brassmunk), King Reign has collaborated with Drake (stream “Fades Away” on Soundcloud), Pharaohe Monch (stream “One More Time” on Soundcloud), Raphael Saadiq, Saukrates (watch the music video for “Guilty”), Kardinal Offishall (watch the music video for “Money”) and Boi-1da (watch the music video for “This Means War”). Reign’s last video from the Sincere album was for “Chemical Romance” which premiered on 2DopeBoyz (watch). “The phrase ‘Happylaidback’ describes my everyday personality,” says Reign. “As a Libran I strive to stay balanced. Balance equates to happiness for me. No matter how busy or stressed I am, the plan is to stay relaxed through it all. The plan is to be happy. The verses tell you that I’m still working on it. ‘I’m busy like Tuesday, easy like Sunday morning’.”

After a string of EPs and collaborations with the likes of Drake, Saukrates and Pharoahe Monch, Toronto rap stalwart King Reign is more than ready for his reign to begin. Recognized for his thoughtful poeticism and laid-back demeanour, these traits are clearly exhibited all across his long-awaited debut record Sincere.
The man recently stopped by the Exclaim! office to deliver an acoustic performance of the title track from his aforementioned full-length release.
Armed with only a microphone and a cajón, Reign begins by laying down a groovy beat before launching into the song’s heartfelt hook. Eyes closed and incredibly focused, he keeps time without fail while expertly navigating through his verses. Much like the title implies, the soulful, stripped-back rendition of the album cut is in no short supply of sincerity.
Nice lineup for Gift Of Music 2014. JRDN, Leila Dey, August Rigo, The Flan, King Reign Falana + Kim Davis, who’ll also be co-hosting with Kid Kut, with music provided by Jester. The event/initiative is also celebrating its 5 year anniversary.
