NEW VIDEO: Jazz Cartier – New Religion (Directed by Fantavious Fritz)

rez | Video | Monday, March 16th, 2015

Money is the new religion for Jazz Cartier but rappers have been worshiping the Benjis for decades now. So much hip-hop is just a guilty pleasure for me at this point. The sh*t sounds dope as hell but money definitely shouldn’t be anyone’s religion, lol. Cool, I get it. You want to make a million! Whoop whoop! Thanks for letting me know. Everyone frikkin’ does. So what? So……….un…….interesting. Snooze. And I know Jazz too. Sorry man. Not meaning to go in so hard but that’s just how I feel right now.

I think there should be like a 5-year ban on rappers talking about money and b*tches. I appreciate some of the personal truths in the 2nd verse but really though, is this money sh*t ever going to stop?

TO EVERY RAPPER: THINK OF SOMETHING ELSE TO RAP ABOUT.

Bah! New official viz from Jazz Cartier.

Toronto monthly event #TheHustle features a buzzing all-city lineup headlined by Keita Juma.

TORONTO – The Academy is back with the third edition of its recently launched #TheHustle concert series. Helping ring spring in are three Toronto acts quickly building a buzz in their home city and beyond. Leading the pack is Keita Juma, the Fake Arts Records artist who recently released his Chaos Theory LP to critical acclaim and SoundCloud success (over 35,000 plays since January 6th, 2015). He’s also received broad love for the innovative video for lead single “Come Over” featuring Brendan Philip, invoking infectious deep house grooves while the duo exchange casually swagged-out verses. The labelmates and longtime collaborators will be performing a set presented by Manifesto and Red Bull Sound Select at the Field Trip music festival in June, alongside the legendary alt-hip hop group De La Soul.

Adding to the local firepower are Mad Kids Records rapper Beaugé and StayOutLate, a trio of Brampton-bred and 416-based emcees Tremayne, Scott Free and Japes. All five artists on the roster have been steadily building a buzz in Toronto by playing key shows, collaborating with buzz producers, and aligning with innovative artists to disrupt the scene from the inside out. On March 19th, 2015, Torontonians will get a chance to see just why #TheHustle is putting the spotlight on these very talented individuals. Providing the soundtrack for the night is another young talent, DJ Yobi (DSTRY).

About Keita Juma:
Alternative Hip Hop never sounded so good, Keita Juma is what you wish you heard when you were younger and what your glad you heard now. He is “Hip Hop” inviting Rock, R’n’B and Dance Music to dinner and everyone wants seconds.

Compared to the likes of Common, Andre 3000 and Mos Def, this young man is fitted for the Hip Hop history books. Keita Juma is a credited recording engineer and mix engineer – the best sound is always first priority. Self-production inspired by Danger Mouse (Gnarles Barkley), Kanye West and many more has made this sound so diverse but yet still current. Raised in England and relocating to Canada at 11, “A Breath of Fresh Heir” is what music needs and is what you will get.

NEW VIDEO: Ain’t No Love – Plummet (Short Film) (Directed by Indrani)

rez | Video | Sunday, March 15th, 2015

Ain’t No Love get their “Birdman” on with the crazy long steady-cam work as part of the promotional short film / music video for their new Plummet EP. Shouts to the emcees but I’ve been saying it and will continue to say it…this needs to be the Saidah Conrad show.

Plummet is available here now.

Warner Music Canada recording artists Ain’t No Love will launch their new EP, Plummet, on Tuesday, March 10, 2015. To introduce the world to the music of Plummet, the band recruited award-winning director and photographer Indrani Pal-Chadhuri to produce a phantasmagorical 10 minute film that features all of the record’s six tracks. Beginning March 10, fans can go to aintnolove.com to watch the film and download the EP.

Critics have labelled Toronto’s Ain’t No Love as Renegade Pop or electro hiphop while others simply call it exciting. With a sound cultivated in the clubs and on the streets of Montreal, the trio has perfected the craft of body moving music with an attitude. Rappers 1990 and Beanz deliver edgy lyrics and control the crowd with ease, while singer Saidah’s sultry presence and chilling vocals can hypnotize any audience. The six tracks on Plummet cover a dizzying array of sounds and beats that set Ain’t No Love apart from the rest of the hip hop world.

The EP’s title track ‘Plummet’, whose drug-driven lyrics are a fitting introduction to Ain’t No Love’s fearlessness, a band that does not shy away from taboo subjects. Indeed, the track, ‘Pussy Down’, only continues to demonstrate the group’s bold nature as they flip the standard expectations of hip hop on their head. The track ‘Summa’ was produced by fellow Canadian Birthday Boy, whose recent take on Beyonce’s ‘Party’ reached the top 5 spot on the Hype Machine Remix Chart. His idea, in his own words, was “to blend House and R&B, do it a bit up-tempo then switch to half time for the verses’’, and it’s an aim he has undoubtedly achieved.

Birthday Boy is not the only formidable producer to lend his talent to this EP. Toronto- based producers Avenue, Rich Kidd, and Nightizm also contribute alongside Australian Cam Bluff. Avenue has been responsible for Tobtok, Miami Horrow, Lemaitre and Penguin Prison edits, and the track he produced on the EP, ‘Cry in the Rain’ has already made it to no. 4 on the Hype Machine’s most popular chart. Bluff is credited for the production of Hilltop Hoods and 360 records, and Rich Kidd has been nominated for several JUNOs, while the up-and-coming Nightizm has received coveted exposure from the likes of THUMP.

To produce the master-piece film that is Plummet, director Indrani reunited with fashion art director GK Reid (together they have worked on music videos for David Bowie and Mariah Carey among others) and DoP Pasha Patriki to create a unique one-shot film in which the camera seems to float as it follows Saidah trying to escaope a party that is one person’s fantasy and another’s nightmare. The surprise ending will surely shock the viewer.

Ain’t No Love’s live talents have led them to share the stage with such celebrated artists as Zeds Dead, Iggy Azalea, Steve Aoki, Redman and Calvin Harris. They’ve also played industry showcases like SXSW and been featured on MTV, Billboard and Majestic Casual. The Bridge and Law remix of their track ‘Love Me Lots’ currently has over one million views on YouTube.
With a wealth of talent involved in its making, Ain’t No Love have created a genre-bending EP which mixes elements from across the board to create a unique kind of renegade pop – an original and attention-grabbing brand of club-ready music. The group achieves what few artists do: craft radio-friendly tracks whilst maintaining underground appeal. With two EPs, a handful of music videos and past performances spanning across the USA, UK and Canada, Ain’t No Love is prepared to release their next body of work: an EP called Plummet.
