Niiiice collabo between producer Birthday Boy and singer Trish. Def looking forward to the EP. And shouts to Trish man. She’s been on the grind for a MINUTE now. This is def a good look.
Hailing from Toronto, Canada, producer / DJ Birthday Boy has been awarded numerous accolades thanks to an eclectic musical style that draws influence from jazz, house, hip-hop, R&B, and funk. Via remixes, original productions, and collaborations, Birthday Boy has won praise from tastemakers worldwide including Pitchfork, FADER, Hypebeast, and more. Having spent the majority of 2017 relatively quiet, Birthday Boy is closing out the year with a sneak peek of what’s come in 2018 by way of a new track with Toronto singer / songwriter Trish titled “Magic.”
Out today via Brooklyn label Bastard Jazz, “Magic” represents the first cut off a yet-to-be-titled forthcoming EP due 2018. On “Magic,” listeners again hear Birthday Boy launch into a rich soundscape of R&B influenced rhythms, a four on the floor beat, mesmerizing synth, and a jarring vocal performance from Trish. The distinctly catchy tune takes additional influence from lauded UK musician Tom Misch whose guitar loop provides the foundation for the track.

Toronto’s Chloe Charles makes her debut on Kowloon Records signaling a departure from her more jazz and modern chamber music leaning output towards more sleek, R&B-tinted pop directions. Her striking first single “Head High” is an immersive, soulful venture combining virtuosic vocal hooks, brooding atmospheres, and galloping drums touching upon themes of being an outsider and questioning society’s norms.
A preview into her forthcoming full-length on Kowloon Records due Spring 2018, “Head High” expands on the highly unique and stylized soundscapes put forth on her acclaimed albums ‘With Blindfolds On’ and ‘Break the Balance’ which were received well from a wide range of esteemed publications including Billboard Magazine, Rolling Stone, Mojo, London Times and Elle.
“[Chloe Charles] sings unique and colourful songwriter – pop songs with an introverted beauty of surprising clarity.” — Rolling Stone
Toronto’s Chloe Charles has a distinct, curious rasp to her voice. The guitarist/singer-songwriter’s musical approach is poised and urgent, with hypnotic notes of hope and melancholy. — Exclaim
