EVENT: The Airplane Boys Live @ Harbourfront (Free Show) (Friday, June 29th)

rez | Events | Thursday, June 28th, 2012

Message to any upcoming artists. This is the model to follow. These guys have no American co-sign (i.e. from an established artist) and no label. Yet, they have a solid fanbase, mad love across the border, and watch how ramm it’s going to be on Friday night. The craziest thing about it is that they JUST started getting commercial radio play up here too. But that’s the joke…that’s how it’s SUPPOSED to be. You’re supposed to build your buzz and your fanbase and then let radio come to you at the right time. Everyone out here is trying to get on FLOW and G but no one knows you. Even with radio rotation you can’t get 100 people to a show in your own city of over 5 million. Backwards thinking. But I digress.

Anyways…to finish my point…Melanie Fiona, Shad, Kardi, Era (and now APB) etc…all realistic and humble paths to success. Study how they did it and are doing it. And shouts to free shows. The fact that Drake hasn’t done a free show here still irks me. Bah!

  1. I have to disagree about the no Amercian co-sign part. When you’re signed to Stampede, the same management team as DJ Quik, Snoop Dogg, Far East Movement, Mystikal & YG, even without the artist going out and saying “I co-sign The Airplane Boys” they get a co-sign and are given opportunities that most other artists aren’t given. Plus Snoop taking them on a UK tour and the Ontario mini-tour is a huge co-sign most artists never get.

Yes, they’ve done amazing things for a group from Toronto that only came together about 3 years ago, and they’ve got my backing 100%. But hardly can it be said that they’ve done it without a co-sign or being given opportunities that most artists will never get. The Airplane Boys’ model shows that a large part of success is about those you have around you, and choosing the right team. While they’d be well on their way right now, I don’t think they would have ever gotten as far as they have in such a short time if they didnt have Ashley and were using a friend as a manager like most up-and-coming artists have to do.

  2. Let me clarify by saying that by “co-sign” I mean a public co-sign from a marquee artist. Having good management that gets you on tour dates etc is not a co-sign. That’s just smart.

  3. At the end of the day to build a successful model in this industry you need a good team and that’s for anything. It’s what you do with those opportunities, they’re given to you because you deserve it and these guys deserve it. In my eyes they have yet to have a public co-sign and there are a lot of artists that have American Rep but aren’t able to do what the airplane boys do and a lot of it has to do with the quality of work they put out. Sure they have a great team but so does Drake, The Weeknd and Melanie Fiona before they got signed. Quality and a good team. Let’s just sit back and watch something special enfold.
