TORONTO – With less than two months to the release of his long-awaited fourth albumFlying Colours, Juno award-winning Canadian emcee Shad puts on his dancing shoes and throws a party with his new video “Fam Jam (Fe Sum Immigrins)” which makes its Canadian broadcast premiere on MuchMusic and online via RapGenius.comtoday. 

 

The MuchFACT supported video, directed by Toronto photographer and community organizer Che Kothari, sees Shad flex his acting muscle playing a sprightly old man ready to throw a party at his local community hall. The video shoot itself became such an exhilarating celebration of family, friendship and we’re-all-in-this-togetherness, that the pure joy is perfectly captured on film.

 

Produced by Skratch Bastid, “Fam Jam” is an uplifting track, rooted in the joyous music of Africa, and is a proud shout out to Shad’s family and people everywhere who have experienced the struggle of finding their place in the world. Shad illustrates the obstacles and triumphs that are familiar to many with lyrics like: From donated clothes to caps and gowns/ just a little shout to my black and brown folks/ that know the game/ not in class to clown/ Had the funny accent/ well look who’s laughing now.

 

Born in Kenya to Rwandan parents and raised in London, Ontario, Shad also tells his personal immigration story. In the moving verse, he describes seeing the Rwandan genocide on TV and trying to comprehend the troubling images of the place his family once called home.
