VIDEO: KAYTRANADA Interview w/ Red Bull Music Academy

rez | Video | Saturday, October 15th, 2016

More dopeness from the Red Bull Music Academy. KAYTRA!!!

Montréal’s own production star and 2016 Polaris Prize winner Kaytranada joined Anupa Mistry on the lecture couch for a wide-ranging conversation on his musical upbringing and synthesis of diverse tastes into a sound that’s entirely his own. This lecture coincided with the debut of a new episode of The Junction, an animated tale of Kaytranada and 2016 Academy participant River Tiber’s creative encounters.

The Red Bull Music Academy is a global music institution committed to fostering creativity in music. We celebrate music, its culture, and the transformative minds behind it. Begun in 1998, the Academy has taken the core principles that underlie its annual workshop for selected participants and applied this curatorial approach to events, lectures, and city-wide festivals throughout the year.

tonacomeup02

Gawd damn man. Just the beginning of this has me rushing to go take in Part I first and then get right back to this one.

This is part two of Tona Tencreddi’s interview.

On this episode, he talks about his 3rd solo album that was just released: “Ivy League”. He shares why he feels he is at his peak form as an artist. We also go back to the legendary night at the Juno when he won Best Rap Recording of the year with Naturally Born Strangers. Even after all the success from that group, he answers why he doesn’t want to be in groups anymore.

Each and every Wednesday we’ll be uploading a brand new interview with a guest we feel that you should know about. If you love podcasts subscribe at the options below.

VIDEO: Mass Appeal – Rhythm Roulette w/ Wondagurl

rez | Video | Friday, October 14th, 2016

Rhythm Roulette with that gurl Wondagurl!

If you crossed paths with WondaGurl, consider yourself blessed. Although she’s a shy and kind girl on the surface, she’s one of the meanest producers in the game. Since learning some tricks of the trade from Boi-1da, she’s been getting placements with Travis Scott (“Antidote” & “Uptown”), Jay Z (“Crown”), Drake (“Used To” & “Company”), SZA (“Teen Spirit”), and Rihanna (“Bitch Better Have My Money”). That’s not all of her credits either.

After hitting up Rotate This, WondaGurl ends up with Solid Sound’s “A Wooden Box,” Images In Vogue’s “In The House,” and The Magnolias’ Concrete Pillbox. Laying The Magnolias to the side, Wonda uses samples from the other two records for a bass heavy beat. Watch her craft the banger above.

NEW VIDEO: Dillin Hoox – Bad dream

rez | Video | Thursday, October 13th, 2016

Introduction to Dillin Hoox. Putting this up more so for the subject matter rather than the overall execution of the song (as it’s obviously pretty dated sonically). Always good to know that MCs are still out there trying to talk about the problems of the world though. It’s easy to forget that there are still socially/politically conscious rappers out there…

Dillin Hoox was born in Mahabad, Kurdistan, midway through the horrific Iran-Iraq war where his family barely avoided Saddam Hussein’s chemical attacks against his people. In the first few years of his life, Hoox’s family immigrated to Canada, leaving behind a hostile and oppressive environment and uncertain future. After moving from coast-to-coast, living in both Halifax and Vancouver, his family settled in Ottawa – the capital city he proudly represents today. In Ottawa, he earned his BA in Psychology from Carleton University.

Born into a family of poets, Hoox has a natural ability to paint a picture with words; expressing his thoughts and piecing together his emotions through his lyrics. As a young artist, he is determined, inspired, witty, and well-spoken. Through music, Hoox showcases his inner-thoughts regarding the struggles of Kurdistan and the plight of the Kurdish people.
