NEW ALBUM: Saukrates – Season One (Full Album Stream)

IT’S REAL! IT’S REAL! IT’S REAL!

Exclaim got the official stream of the most anticipated album in Toronto hip-hop history. Like…you can actually listen to the full Saukrates album right now (it officially drops next week).

By Gregory Adams

Canadian hip-hop pro Saukrates has been releasing tracks off his Season One LP piecemeal since last fall, but the time has finally come for the MC to play all his cards at once and issue the album as a cohesive whole. Next Tuesday (April 24) marks the long-anticipated album’s proper release, and you can stream the whole thing right now here on Exclaim.ca.

As expected, the previously heard, Redman-assisted “Drop It Down” is featured on the album, which marks Saukrates’s first proper full-length effort 1999’s The Underground Tapes, but there are even more collaborations scattered throughout the 17-song Season One. Saukrates teams up with K-os and Nelly Furtado for “On the Run,” while OB O’Brien pops up twice on the collection (“Save the Day” and “Say I”).

“When it calls for collaborations I let that happen naturally,” Saukrates previously said in a statement. “Friends and associates I’ve been anxious to work with and vise versa make it easy to accomplish my ‘lofty’ ideas!”

Season One is set to be released through Frostbyte/eOne.

NEW ALBUM: Fraction & Freshkils “Extra Science”

Ty Harper | Album,Audio,Music | Monday, April 16th, 2012

What a great time to be checking for hip-hop in Canada. So many dope projects coming out on the regular and this one is no different.  Fresh Kils – who’s arguably the busiest artist out there right now  – hooks up with Kitchener emcee/deejay Fraction for “Extra Science”. Definitely got that late 90s boom-bap feel with a 2012 shine. The project also features appearances from The Get By and Mister E.

Nice.

NEW ALBUM: Elaquent “The Scenic Route”

Ty Harper | Album,Audio,Music | Friday, April 13th, 2012

Elaquent’s  latest full-length project “The Scenic Route” hits the digital sphere and honestly after taking in the bulk of his past and current projects, this dude is without question an artist/producer to check for if you haven’t already.

You can find his previous releases @ www.soundcloud.com/elaquent

“Life is a journey. It is very easy to take the safe path to get to your destination.
But what fun is that? Half the fun of the journey is NOT knowing how you will get there.
Life is far too short to not have fun with it. I could have taken the safe path of life with my university degree and be working a high paying, boring job. Well, I could still do that really anytime I want. Nothing wrong with taking the safe path, if thats what you’re really looking for in life. However, that doesnt do it for me.
I dont want to be an old man, like 70, looking back, wishing I would have kept following my dreams and pursue music when I was 25.

This album is inspired by that very idea. In the past year, I’ve found myself in lots of situations
where I’ve had to choose between professional progression and chasing the dream, much to the dismay of some of my peers and even some of my family. But its all good. I aint even mad. Dont let anybody tell you that what you want to do is a waste of time. Often times the things we look for in life are
foolish to try to chase. Chase it anyways. Who cares. Why not. Have fun. Relax. Enjoy the music.
Take The Scenic Route.”

NEW MUSIC: BadBadNotGood “BBNG 2” + NEW VIDEO: “UWN” feat. Leland Whitty

Ty Harper | Album,Audio,Music,Video | Friday, April 6th, 2012

Toronto three-piece ensemble BADBADNOTGOOD are unleashing BBNG2 onto the world today. Their second full length free album, in addition to two live albums they’ve put out in the past few months (BBNGLIVE1 and BBNGLIVE2), this newest opus sees the group balance interpretations of songs that have become staples of their live sets, like James Blake’s “Limit to Your Love” and Gucci Mane’s “Lemonade,” with original material that showcases the group’s range light-years beyond most expectations of what a drums / keys / bass trio can produce.

The opening number “Earl,” aptly named after the Odd Future comeback kid, is a monstrous mash of drowning keys, thundering snares, clever bassline, and a saxophone effort courtesy of Leland Whitty. “Vices,” premiered by OkayPlayer yesterday, may be the group’s most daring and layered song to date. Soft atmospheric keys lead to mounting chord progressions that culminate in a frentic climax,  pulling back into halftime at the midway mark with a hypnotic melody remniscent of the best elements of UK bass. “CHSTR” sees the group produce a more mellow sound. This time, the running bassline takes centerstage after a progressive drum / keys set up and the song ultimately leads into a euphoric melody that keeps elevating into a final medley.

After receiving wide acclaim for their initial Odd Future covers, then going viral with the live jam sessions with Tyler the Creator, and their critically-acclaimed set at Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide Awards, the group is on its course to have a big year in 2012. Next major stop is a their much-anticipated set at Coachella, followed by some select North American dates and other festival plays throughout the summer.

Hit the jump for visuals for the single “UWN”.
