Zaki Ibrahim’s “Every Opposite” could be the year’s most surprising inclusion on the Polaris Music Prize short list. Not because of its sound, which is both bravely futuristic and classically soulful, but its atypical route to visibility. Originally released only in Ibrahim’s current home base of South Africa, “Every Opposite” has found its way to Canadian ears via word of mouth and an online release, carried by an enthusiastic swell for its unique globe-trotting R&B aesthetic and Ibrahim’s rich vocal layering. At one point a major-label backed artist based out of Toronto, Ibrahim decamped to her father’s native South Africa following her last release, 2008’s “Eclectica (Episodes in Purple)” EP, then quietly built “Every Opposite while traveling between Cape Town, London, and Toronto.

Between bumping into P. Reign over at MuchMusic the day he premiered this video – which was also the day of that massive flood – and having my laptop in the shop for almost two weeks (thanks to an inebriated dude that spilt his boy’s drink all over it while I was deejaying a boat cruise), I completely forgot to post this up. Bottom line: my bad.

Anyways, here’s the visuals for his collabo with A$AP Rocky off the upcoming “Dear America” project.

New Grand Analog with Big Soxx + two other cuts off their upcoming “Modern Thunder” album.

Grand Analog is a raw collective of seasoned record collectors, musicians and self-described beat junkies. Creator and lead vocalist, Odario Williams, describes the Grand Analog sound as “a beautiful mess of Rap’n’Roll, Dub & Soul”. Band members include bassist Warren Bray, keyboardist Alister Johnson, drummer TJ Garcia and DJ Ofield Williams. Grand Analog’s latest offering, Modern Thunder, was produced collectively with each band member bringing unique flavour and raw talent to the soundscape. Modern Thunder keeps GA’s amalgamated genre traditions alive by fine-tuning what is now the Grand Analog sound. Modern Thunder is Hip-Hop’s new folklore; skillfully and subtly blending anything from Afro-Beat to Rock (and even a little sunshine itself) into the mix.

Jimmy Johnson releases his second single to touch the music world entitled “Loud As Fuck” produced by Raz Fresco. This single takes the listener on a ride that feels like being in a car going 400 miles per hour, with the radio turned all the way up and the windows rolled all the way down. Delivering lightning fast lyrics along with a catchy hook, Jimmy looks to captivate his audience once more with a brand new sound of his own. This is the latest offering off of “In God We Trust”, Jimmy Johnson’s debut project set to release later this summer.
