SHORT DOC: StudioFeed Films presents LAL “The Bridge”

Ty Harper | Community,Documentary,Music,Video | Sunday, August 25th, 2013

Just happened on this great piece on Toronto musicians, activists, and residents LAL (Rosina, Murr and Ian) produced/directed by StudioFeed.

The piece covers the band’s music, activism and relationship with Toronto. Definitely worth putting aside some time to take in.

Formed in 1998 by Bengali-rooted Rosina Kazi and her life partner, Barbados-born Nicholas Murray and later joined by Ugandan-born Ian De Souza, LAL proves incessantly hard to define.

StudioFeed first sat down with Rose, Nic and Ian in April of 2012. With their self-titled release, “LAL,” set to debut at the Garrison in Toronto on May 18, we here at StudioFeed thought that we had a straight forward shoot in store; film the band, talk about the record and culminate in the record release party at the Garrison. But then we actually got to know the members of LAL, and that whole plan went out the window.

LAL has been described as a “music making magical mushroom, the visible flowering part of a much larger organism, connected with very fine but infinitely resilient roots.” They are “obsessed with making music but more obsessed with using the making of music as a way to materialize ways of being together, fostering a sharing of resources, ideas and, at bottom, maintaining a tenacious hope that persists despite the frightening world we live in.”

Sit back. Take 15 minutes. LAL is what Independent Music is all about.

NEW VIDEO: Rich Kidd (feature w/ Noisey.com)

Ty Harper | Music,Video | Saturday, August 24th, 2013

Noisey’s profile on Richie had me going from dope to lol to oh shit! in like 5 minutes, wow..

Toronto’s very own Rich Kidd—a rapper/producer whose career has been bubbling since working with Comeback Season era Drake—hasn’t had the healthiest few weeks. That’s because he broke his ankle while we were hanging out with him at the Caribana parade (and, for better for worse, the whole incident is captured in our short doc that’s embedded above).

If you don’t know what Caribana is, then you’re probably not Canadian, and that’s ok! Caribana is said to be North America’s largest street festival, and it’s not hard to get that feeling once you’re actually there. The parade has a ton of pretty girls in Caribbean feather dresses being chased around by thirsty dudes, cops operating police surveillance cameras, decent street food, a tragic history of gun violence, and a ton of crazy floats. Oh, and the Soca music is so loud we had to subtitle most of this footage.

Anyway, outside of the parade, we were hanging out with Rich while he was recording with Jay-Z’s right-hand-man Young Guru (Rich is next to blow, in our humble opinion) and we also visited The Remix Project—an amazingly important community center for kids who want to make an album, a film, or get into business.

So, watch and learn about this cool young man before he gets too famous to hang out at intensely overcrowded parades and hopefully the next time we take an artist out to a parade nothing bad happens.

Follow Rich Kidd on Twitter and let him know you want his ankle to heal soon.

NEW VIDEO: Eklipz – Here We Go Again (Round & Round)

rez | Video | Wednesday, August 21st, 2013

Some nostalgic reflective newness from the homie Eklipz (from the mighty Crown A’ Thornz crew).

Just checking through Facebook and I clicked on an instrumental track by 1988 a producer from around the way, and I was really liking the vibe of the track so I started writing right away, brought the joint over to my Lil Bro EJ Grant of the Bosquiat Clique and did a quick recording, and shot a video for it with the help of my Sunz. I put a little more chops into the edits in post and messed around with griming up the footage, all shot with the Canon 5D and edited in Final Cut Pro 7 and After effect CS5. Truly we have no excuses for not pushing the artistic envelope and putting more content into the realm. Mostly everyone has a cell phone with cameras and video and a program on their phone to be able to cut something together. Hip Hop was created out of basic elements and is now a global phenomenon, Chose your tools and build something of Merit.

Peace
Eklipz –

NEW VIDEO: Chloe Charles “Break The Balance”

Ty Harper | Music,Video | Monday, August 19th, 2013

1st introduction to Chloe Charles – a singer, writer and guitarist that’s been making waves for a minute but just happened on our radar more recently thanks to mentions from mans like Wan, ladies like Tika, and a random follow from Charles herself on my twitter account. This is her latest video, and title track to her latest album, but definitely hit her at www.chloecharles.com to get on board with her movement if you haven’t already been on it.
